So...a 19 year old just lost most of his sight, and has went to a 6 month training program. He started working at our local braille institute, and is showing the fuck off! I can't take it. He think he knows more then others just because he's gone through training. How long has he been partial? about half a year. Has he gone through most of the things the other students who are total have? hell no! but he insists that he did. I just get so anoyed with knewly blind/visually impaired people who think they know everything without actually experiencing things themselves. He does have a guide dog, but does he use him for navigating? no. He let's lose, and the dog almost got ran over because it was poorly trained... I hate having to deal with him every week...

Training centers can help a lot, I hear, but they don't suddenly label you a genious, so I can see where you're coming from. It also depends how much of it the person decides to make use of. It doesn't sound like this person is using much of the information from training. Lol.

Just put a whoopy cushion in his chair, tie one of those imitation flashbangs to his desk drawer, or something else both interesting and spazz-inspiring, and you'll slow him down ... or have a prank comin' your way ... lol

anyway, wow, that sounds like that kind of person i'd happily feed to my famous chickens, i don't know, it could also be that he wants to appear like that because he knows he's just the opposite and it makes him insecure? if he's just lost his sight maybe he's not accepting it and tries to appear superior but feels a totally different way... just my humble thoughts

I agree. I've often seen this type of behavior in people who are insecure with themselves and are trying to convince themselves and others of their qualities.
I still don't know how to deal with that in people though, whether to try and help them or bash their heads against an avocado.
But at lest it helps a little to realize that there is a reason and this might go away once they get over it.
We see this shit even with sighteds. They have "met" blind people in the past and thus think they know how we "operate" and dare to become teachers at blind schools. Fuck them!

Lory is right. Some of the most arrogant blind people are also some of the most insecure. They talk about their independence, preach independence, and want you to think they are, when really, they're not. And you're right, Ray, partials like that annoy me. No offense to anyone on here who has partial vision, cuz I know not everyone is like that. In fact, most people with partial vision aren't. But Ray's got a point. But, the arrogance because of insecurity thing doesn't just apply to blind people, often sighted ones show-off because of insecurity, too.
If I hadn't known who Ray was already, I'd have thought it was a BF thing, too, but it never crossed my mind. Unless there's something we don't know about you, Ray. *Grin* JK.
Margorp, you're right, too. A lot of sighted people think they know everything about us, and they often know less than even show-offs like the one Ray is describing in his first post. And you're also right that unfortunately, idiots like that often work in Braille schools, or rehab agencies, etc, and make some of the worst teachers/counselors. Oh well, I guess that's where self advocacy comes in.
Things such as this don't usually bother me too much, until people start bringing their dream-crushing opinions into it. (Blind people can't maintain a household. Blind people can never maintain a relationship with another blind person. Blind people cannot play on sighted sports teams, ETC.)

That reminds me of some of the flack Erik Weihenmayer had to take when he was climbing mountains. Dr. Laura in particular gave him a lot of shit. Of course she used his family as the reason since he'd had a daughter by that time, but I don't doubt that his blindness was as much if not more a part of Dr. Laura's reasoning. I've never liked her to be honest.
Dr. Laura was always something of a bitch but she will admit that on her show.
I've heard those same dream-crushing things too, and it's a load of crap. The saddest part is that there are blind people out there who, unfortunately, believe those things. Either they don't have the training, the life experience, the mental capacity, etc, to know that they're being fed a line of crap. To me, that's just as sad as the fact that there are people out there dishing up these false ideas.
Dr. Laura sucks, in my opinion. I have a blunt personality, but she takes it to the level of hurting people rather than helping them. Still, people know what they're going to get when they call into her, so I don't feel too sorry for them. OK, so that's a bit off-topic, but oh well. Grin.
